Some do recover, but it takes a lot more than the love of a spouse/parent — only after a complete surrender do some have a chance. I’ve seen that miracle happen for a few — I have, however, seen a lot more who just couldn’t or wouldn’t surrender. Addiction is very powerful.

This is right on, though. The loved ones have to do whatever is necessary to take care of themselves, and protect themselves from the complete and utter damage an active addict will cause.
